What you'll do
Learn the foundations of silk painting in one relaxed, beginner-friendly session — then keep using the skills long after the workshop ends.
Coffee Break Silk Painting is an artist-led introduction to silk painting, created by professional artist Miu Shu from decades of painting and teaching experience.
Over many years of working with silk, Miu has refined the process into five core techniques designed specifically to help complete beginners understand how silk colour moves, blends and behaves.
You do not need to know how to draw, and no previous painting experience is required.
Your design is prepared for you, so instead of worrying about drawing, you can focus on learning the techniques and enjoying the unique way colour flows through real silk.
The session begins with a guided demonstration, where Miu introduces the five foundation techniques step by step. You will then use these methods to complete your own A5 silk artwork at a comfortable, unhurried pace.
More than a one-off workshop
This session is designed to give you a skill you can continue using.
Once you have learned the techniques for this beginner level, you are not limited to the design you paint during the workshop. You can choose from hundreds of other beginner-level silk painting templates and continue creating in your own way.
If you enjoy the process and would like to keep painting, follow-on silk painting kits are also available, allowing you to continue at home without needing to repeat the introductory lesson.
Learn the techniques once. Keep creating at your own pace.
Two Huntly settings
You can choose the atmosphere that suits you best:
Thursdays — Dean’s Bistro, Depot Road
A warm and sociable café setting, ideal if you enjoy painting alongside gentle conversation, tea or coffee.
Saturdays — Huntly Silk Painting Studio, just off Huntly Square
A quieter, dedicated silk-painting studio with a calm atmosphere for more focused creative time.
You are very welcome to come on your own, with a friend, or as part of a relaxed day out in Huntly.
Allow approximately 1½–2 hours for the full experience, including the guided demonstration and your own painting time.
By the end of the session, you will take home your completed silk artwork — together with a set of foundation skills you can continue using if you choose to explore silk painting further.
